How it started

Before it was a company, it was a friendship.

Archive · The early days

Pritpal and Ravneet met through their love of bhangra. The dance came first, then the friendship, and then the marriage.

In 2018 they put a name on it, and the name said exactly what it was. A company of their own, run by the two dancers who still answer every enquiry themselves.

The private bookings came first, in November 2018. The School of Bhangra followed in March 2019, built for people who had never danced and wanted somewhere to start. Everything since has grown from the same two aims, keeping the culture alive and giving something back.

"We wanted something of our own, and a way to give back to the community that gave us bhangra."

New to bhangra?

The dance, the drum and the story behind it.

Bhangra is a high-energy folk dance from Punjab, a region that spans northern India and Pakistan. It began as a celebration of the harvest at Vaisakhi, and it's known for raised arms, bouncing shoulders and big, joyful steps.

The dhol, a double-sided drum, drives the beat. Giddha is its partner dance, traditionally performed by women and built on claps, rhythm and boliyan, the sung couplets that set the pace. Jodi Dancers perform and teach both.

Giving back

Folk dance. Shared with everyone.

From the very first month, bhangra has been how Jodi Dancers gives back. We've danced with patients at Compton Hospice, collected gifts for Birmingham Children's Hospital, supported the Sikh Toy Appeal and run sessions in care homes, schools and SEND settings.

We also talk openly about mental health, through Jodi Dancers Talks and our work alongside local mental health charities. Bhangra has always been about bringing people together, and that's the part we never want to lose.
